Chapter 1 Health for Life
Around the world, people value physical health as well as mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Despite the importance of health, our behaviors often compromise this precious resource. When suboptimal behaviors become habitual, we cease to connect them to ill health. We don’t get enough sleep, neglect our relationships, eat junk food, stress out, sit too much, and exercise too little—yet can’t figure out why we feel tired most of the time.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Habits can change. Health should evolve naturally, pleasurably. Appreciating beauty, feeling joy and compassion, enjoying friends, engaging with work, having a sense of purpose, savoring delicious food, moving our bodies, spending time in nature, taking time to rest and sleep—all these things promote vitality. They also prevent illness and speed recovery when illness strikes.
This chapter will explore the elements of health and wellness, national and global health challenges, and the lifestyle patterns that promote vibrant health.
